Finding Gold Nuggets
Despite what some dealers may tell you, you aren’t going to have any success finding gold nuggets using a cheap metal detector. Those coin detectors might do a decent job finding coins in the park, but finding gold nuggets is a whole different ballgame.
There are only a handful of metal detectors on the market that are specifically designed to find gold nuggets.
What is so tough about finding nuggets compared to coins and relics? Well, there are a few things, but these are the two biggest challenges:
- Gold nuggets are usually very small
- They are found in highly mineralized ground
Sure there have been some big gold nuggets found over the years, but the vast majority of gold nuggets are pretty small; under 1 gram in size. You need a sensitive detector to find them.
The main challenge associated with finding gold nuggets with a metal detector is that they are almost always found in highly mineralized ground, within soils that contain high percentages of iron. This will give most cheap metal detectors fits! In fact, most multi-purpose metal detectors are almost worthless in the goldfields.
So I have put together this list of trusted detectors. Some of these I currently own, others I have used in the past. These all have a good reputation for gold detecting. They are listed in no particular order. Everyone has their favorites, but I am confident in saying that 95% of gold prospectors today are using one of the metal detectors on this list.

The metal detectors we listed below are all available and can be purchased on the market today. There are certainly others that were manufactured years ago that are still very capable of finding gold nuggets.
Yet, generally the newer technology will have advances that makes them better than their predecessors. There will certainly be some that disagree, but some of the newer detectors that have come out in recent years are some of the best that we have ever seen. The detectors on this list are all highly capable at finding gold nuggets under a variety of situations.
Still, remember that those gold nuggets do not find themselves. You have to get out there and swing your coil over top of a nugget if you actually hope to find one.

Setup Tips to Improve Your Detecting
Gold is scarce. You can spend an entire day in an area known for having gold, without any gold to report at the end of the day. Experts recommend carrying a strong magnet. If you end up finding other minerals, you can use the strong magnet to check whether it’s gold. How? The magnet will not attract gold, whereas the magnet will attract other minerals like iron, magnetite hot rocks, negative hot rocks, positive hot rocks, and meteorites.
Another tip is that your VFL detector may not be lying to you, and it’s not broken. You can find gold on top of hot rocks. If you find something, use the magnet to draw out the hot rocks and check for any gold on the hot rock.
Ensure that you move the search coil slowly and carefully over the surface. It should also be at a specific height that you can capture stronger signals.
If you hear ground noise while searching for gold nuggets, conduct the ground balancing procedure one more time. Ensure that you note the ground changes as you move and keep tabs on the ground balance.
In the case of gold prospecting, experts do not recommend multiple simultaneous frequencies.
